Dreaming of Far Away
Try as I do to live in the present, sometimes I can't help dreaming of being elsewhere, and a recent post from post.com's Kim O'Donnel from her vacation in Vieques did not help! I want to be there so badly right now that the yearning is palpable - my heart may even be pounding faster. To be able to gaze out at the turquoise sea, hear the rustling of palms, sip a mojito, and drift into a blissful reverie...Not that I can complain about the weather here in DC today (sunshine, blue skies, daffodils and crocuses in bloom - the wonderful signs of spring), but lately I have been fantasizing about a number of getaways, including:
- A yoga retreat in Costa Rica (via Tranquil Space)
- The Channel Islands, off the southern coast of California
- Yellowstone Park
- House-swaps with families in Tahoe, Paris, NYC...and, ok, twist my arm: Hawaii
- Berlin
- Tuscany
- New Zealand
Do tell, good readers...do tell!

We spent an anniversary at The Tabbard Inn:

in Dupont.
Yummy food, awesome bar folk and killer neat rooms. This aint no Courtyard Marriot.
Not really emulating any country specifically. It's just the best of all worlds.
Good luck with your search.
Cheesy as it sounds, getting some of those travelogue style DVDs quenches a lot of that for me. Watching a beautiful sea or a dense jungle isn't the same as being there, but picking up some nice scents to match it and cutting out the other senses makes for a nice evening getaway on the couch. Very cheap too.
If you have a hi-def DVD player too, that enhances the immersion.
Personally, I love the ones with train getaways... a train ride through the Adirondacks or Old West. Great stuff.
You're dreaming of warm places, which we don't have here in the city just yet. But here's how I'd plan the perfect day to get that get-away feeling.
First start with a yoga class in the morning. This gets your brain into the right kind of groovy wavelengths for the rest of the day.
Then, because the outdoor cafes aren't opened up yet, you have to plan a leisurely picnic for lunch. Take Italian or tropical lunch to a place near water, like the burbling brooks of Rock Creek Park or the seagull sounds at a picnic table at Haines Point.
If the day is truly cold and gray, choose to go to a casual restaurant right on the water, like Cantina Marina. The upstairs is enclosed and has a nice view of the river and Haine Point.
