Selling Our House

by Amanda on September 6, 2009

Phew. What a week. First the yard sale, where we sold 2/3 of our belongings (“How much for this book?” “One dollar.” “Oh, gee, I don’t know…”). Then three trips to Goodwill (where they are so nice, I could cry from gratitude). Rearranging furniture. Repainting Jordan’s bathroom (which was purple, and is now a cheerful, everyone-will-like-it blue), and replacing his pirate-themed shower curtain with a fluffy, white alternative. I can’t remember the last time I lifted as many boxes, or sorted as much stuff. Yesterday, my eyelid started twitching from the stress.

…But we did it. Our house is officially on the market. Wouldn’t you like to buy this lovely 4BR row home, on fabulous Lanier Place NW?!?

(Quick, obligatory plug: Check out the virtual tour! Open house next Sunday, Sept. 13 from 1-4pm! Tell your friends! Etc etc!)

So now, we wait. People could call, or not call, to schedule a viewing, every day. With the redone bathroom, and the reorganized office, and the library without the sofa beds we got rid of through Freecycle… and never leaving dishes in the sink…and fluffing the towels, just so, after every shower… and making the bed, perfectly… it’s like living in a catalogue.

“Our house is starting to not feel like our home,” Jordan said a few days ago, and it’s true; this place that we’ve loved so much, doesn’t quite feel like it’s ours, anymore. It’s a space we’re temporarily occupying – just like DC is a city we’re temporarily occupying, hovering, in limbo, before making our move north.

It’s a surreal time – difficult, exciting,  and exhausting, all at once. But I have to imagine that after going through this process… the experience of building a new home for ourselves in New York will be that much sweeter.

I’m guessing this means my favorite feature of your whole house, the mismatched floor board on the step, is fixed. I’ll always remember it as it was…

Aww… yes, we said goodbye to Mr. “Odd Sock” floor board :)
