Sculpture on the Head of a Pin

by Amanda on August 25, 2009

This TED video is an amazing testament to the power of patience and attention.

I found myself getting a bit antsy at one point – I don’t usually watch 20-minute videos online – but I thought, “If this man can build a house on the head of pin, or spend six weeks replicating the Statue of Liberty in the eye of a needle, I can sit still for 20 minutes.” “This man” is Willard Wigan, who calls himself a “micro sculptor”; in the video, he talks about crafting apartments for ants as a kid (he was hiding out in the garden shed, instead of going to school).  You can learn more about him on his website.

Thanks to Ken at Mildly Creative for bringing this video to my attention!

I first saw this guy several months ago online, on a news report. He said he’d lost one of his sculptures (I don’t remember which one) when he inhaled, recently. How’s that for the frailty of creation?

Yes, he mentions the “inhalation” incident in this video…and says that’s why he’s learned to work while holding his breath, “between heartbeats”…?!
