Fall 2009 Workshops from Pyramid Atlantic

by Amanda on August 15, 2009

Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring just announced a whole slew of fall workshops in the areas of printmaking, papermaking, book arts, digital media, and collage, plus a handful of workshops for kids. For more information, call (301) 608-9101 or email: gschermerhorn@pyramid-atlantic.org

Here are a few of the workshops that caught my attention:

Introduction to Bookmaking
Saturday, October 17th, 10am-4pm
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own journals, notebooks, photo albums, or scrapbooks but don’t know where to start?
In this one-day workshop, students will gain a basic understanding of the materials and equipment commonly used in bookbinding.  Students will learn three different book structures, including pamphlet, accordian, and japanese stab binding.  We will also discuss how we can take our newly learned bookbinding skills and change the size and shape of a book to suit our personal design needs and style.
Instructor: Patty Lee
Tuition: $120, plus a $10 materials fee payable to instructor

Introduction to Letterpress
Saturday, August 15, 2009, 10am-4pm
also offered October 10, 10am-4pm
A small group workshop for beginners or those wanting a refresher. The workshop will cover how to set metal type, how to use a Vandercook press, how to troubleshoot to get good prints, how to clean up and maintain the presses, and some information about how to use digital technology in combination with letterpress.  Each participant will print a few lines of text of their own choosing
Intructor: Moira McCauley
Tuition: $120

Documenting Artwork
Saturday October 24, 10am- 4pm
In this age of the internet, the first exposure that most people have to your work is through a digital image. In the case of grants, residencies and juried shows, this first impression can be critical. This workshop will focus on tips for documenting your artwork, cleaning up the images in Photoshop and burning them to a CD for easy access. Participants should bring work they want to photograph, ideally avoiding glass frames, and will leave with a CD of their work
Instructor: Selomé Samuel
Tuition: $120

For Kids: Enchanted Storybooks
Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27, 4pm-6pm
Ages 6-8
Through a series of 4 workshops, students will create their own enchanted storybooks from scratch.  They’ll learn how to draw fantastical creatures based on things they observe in nature and in folk tales, make paper from recycled materials, screenprint the story of their fantastical creature, and bind the book together with their own hands.
Instructor: Sha Grogan-Brown
Tuition: $150
