My friend Wendy, who is like a sister to me, had her baby yesterday – Nico Luciano Borrelli.

Welcome to the world, Nico. I can still remember your mom at age 7, or 8, or however old we were in second grade, when she was even shorter than she is now, if you can imagine such a thing. ;)

Not having kids myself, I’ll confess that I was pretty freaked out during her whole pregnancy – I just couldn’t comprehend it, on some level. But today, as soon as I saw her holding you, I understood, in an instant. Suddenly you were the most logical thing – and this is not a logical world, Nico, as you’ll discover some day.

I felt your soft head, covered in daddy’s black hair, and your toes, which looked scaly but were soft, and when you mewed – and you were mewing quite a bit, Nico, which isn’t something I realized babies did – I felt my heart swell with joy.

Your eyes were closed. Your skin was pink. Your mom gave you kisses, and tickled your toes, and outside, snow began to fall.

Welcome.
