Demo-licious

Photo of a lemon cupcake with toasted meringue frosting from cupcakeblog.comEverywhere I go, it seems, I run into someone obsessed with the Food Network. I don’t see the appeal – I love food, sure, but watching people cook holds zero interest.

…Unless, it turns out, that person is someone I know. My friend Kristen recently posted a video demonstrating how to make cupcakes, namely, lemon cupcakes with toasted meringue frosting.

I like her recommended pairing with champagne in a can. I like that I feel like I’m hanging out in her kitchen with her. I like that this looks like something I could do, and like I might even enjoy doing it. And mostly I like watching an artisan at work.

What’s something you love to make that you could demo for others?

Dude, there’s soooo much more to the Food Network than watching people cook. For me, it’s mostly watching other people eat. Food porn. Or watching how they make all of the horrible processed food that we all claim to despise on moral grounds but secretly crave. Stuff like watching the Ben and Jerry’s guy slice into a quart of ice cream with a machete to check the internal consistency. It’s awesome.

We’re always doing social cooking of one type or another, but the biggest one is always homemade dough of one type or another, usually pizza. Everyone assumes breadmaking is really tough, but it’s super easy. And getting to mess around with your own toppings is really freeing. You won’t find too many pizza joints that will make you a scallop pizza with vodka sauce, so it’s fun to mess around with that while friends are over.

Cool cooking video, loved the sped up mixing process. :) I need to get me a kitchen torch.

i don’t seek out the food network but i’ve always enjoyed watching people cook. only if they love cooking. it’s like watching wood-working on PBS or something. it’s beautiful to watch or help someone do something tactile that brings them joy.

Thanks, Amanda.

I’m not a fan of the Food Network anymore, and I think the best shows are actually on PBS.

I agree with John A. on watching people eat; I love watching Nigella Lawson eat recklessly, passionately, on her show.

A creativedc vlog would be pretty awesome. Do it! And/or, I hope you will be a guest on my vlog sometime :)

Kristen, I’d love to be a guest. :) And am definitely thinking of experimenting with video…
